Why Silver Is Moving

Today's drivers, relative value and how silver is trading against other markets.

Silver is higher by $2.12 (4.27%) today at $51.90 an ounce. A weaker US dollar (dollar index −0.32%) helps, because silver is priced in dollars. The dollar move accounts for roughly 5% of the rise; the rest is buying of silver itself. The 10-year real yield, what inflation-protected Treasuries pay after inflation, is 2.65%, down 27 basis points in a month: a tailwind for silver, which pays no interest. Silver is rising alongside stocks (S&P 500 +1.67%), so this is not a flight to safety. Oil is down 2.2% at $93.96 a barrel, which eases inflation pressure. Gold is up as well (+2.74%); silver tends to follow gold and move further in both directions. The next major US release is the Jobs report (October 2026) on Friday, November 6 at 8:30 am ET. Today's silver headlines are mostly about gold and Indian demand.

Most of today's move is silver-specific buying — not just the dollar. Silver often follows gold on dollar and interest-rate news and copper on growth news; a move larger than both usually points to silver's own supply and demand.

Seasonality is historical context, not a forecast. Silver is much more volatile than gold, so a single big year can move a month's average a long way — the median and "% of years up" are often more telling.

Silver Price FAQ

What is the spot price of silver?

The spot price is what one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure silver trades for right now for immediate delivery, quoted in US dollars. It moves nearly 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon (New York time). The price at the top of this page is the midpoint between the current bid and ask.

Why is silver up today?

How is the silver price per gram and per kilo calculated?

Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram, and multiply that by 1,000 for a kilo (one kilo is 32.15 troy ounces). For silverware and jewellery, multiply by the purity: sterling silver (925) is 92.5% silver, coin silver 90%, 800 silver 80%. The purity board and calculator on this page do this automatically in 20 currencies.

Why do silver coins and bars cost more than spot?

Dealers sell above spot to cover minting, shipping and their margin, and these premiums are usually higher for silver than for gold in percentage terms because silver is bulky and cheap per ounce. In the UK and most of the EU, VAT is also charged on silver bullion (investment gold is VAT-exempt). When you sell, dealers usually pay a little below spot.

What is the gold/silver ratio?

It is the gold price divided by the silver price — how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold by historical standards; a falling ratio means silver is outperforming. The ratio card on this page shows today's value against its 10-year range.

What moves the price of silver?

Silver is both a precious and an industrial metal. It tends to follow gold on news about the US dollar, interest rates and inflation, and copper and stocks on news about economic growth. More than half of annual silver demand comes from industry — solar panels, electronics and electric vehicles — according to the Silver Institute, so manufacturing data and solar installations matter too. Silver usually moves more than gold in percentage terms.

What is the difference between spot silver, silver futures and the LBMA price?

Spot is the price for immediate delivery, traded around the clock. COMEX futures are contracts for delivery at a later date, so they usually trade a little above spot to reflect interest and storage costs — right now $0.01 (+0.03%) above spot. The LBMA silver price is a daily benchmark set by auction in London at noon. Our long-term charts use daily futures closes, which track spot very closely.

When is the silver market open?

Silver trades almost around the clock: from 6:00 pm Sunday to 5:00 pm Friday New York time, with a short daily break between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Prices shown during the weekend are Friday's closing levels.

How much is 1 kg of silver today?

One kilogram of pure silver (32.15 troy ounces) is worth $1,669 at today's spot price (₹1,58,249, AED 6,128, £1,244), as of Nov 4, 2026, 15:40 UTC. One gram is $1.67. Bars and coins sell at a premium to these metal values.

How much is 1 tola of silver?

One tola is 11.6638 grams. At today's spot price a tola of pure silver is worth $19.46 (₹1,846, Rs 5,382 before local taxes).

What is 925 silver?

925 or sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, which make it hard enough for jewellery and cutlery. Its metal value today is $1.54 per gram, compared with $1.67 for fine (999) silver.

What time does the silver price change?

Constantly while the market is open — from 6:00 pm Sunday to 5:00 pm Friday New York time, with a one-hour break each weekday at 5:00 pm. The market is open right now. Daily changes are measured from the 5:00 pm New York close. The LBMA silver price benchmark is set by auction at 12:00 noon London time, and India's IBJA publishes silver rates twice each business day.

Why is silver cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Silver bars of 99%+ purity are zero-rated for VAT in the UAE, while India adds 15% import duty and 3% GST. Today a 1 kg bar is worth about ₹1,58,249 in Dubai versus about ₹1,87,446 in India with duty and GST — roughly 16% less, before dealer premiums.

Is now a good time to buy silver?

Nobody can reliably time the silver price, and this is not financial advice. What the data shows: silver is 54.9% below its highest close since 2000 of $115.08 (Jan 26, 2026), and 7% of the way between its 52-week low and high. One ounce of gold buys 77.8 ounces of silver today. Over the past 20 years, silver rose in November 8 times out of 20 (average +1.5%). Silver is more volatile than gold: its price can swing sharply in both directions.

What is the highest silver price ever?

The highest daily close in our COMEX record (since 2000) is $115.08 per troy ounce on January 26, 2026. The famous earlier peak came in January 1980, when the London fix reached $49.45.
